Practice Rooms Location

The choir Practice Rooms,  are situated in PenmaIn in a typical Welsh mining valley. The coal mines are long gone so the area has been reclaimed and landscaped, making it a very pleasant place to live and work. Half a mile along the road from the choir’s HQ lies the former mining village of Oakdale, built in the early 1900’s to house the miners and their families. Unlike other villages, it was built to a grand design with unheard of amenities. Each house had hot and cold running water, bathroom and garden with the community enjoying the services of a hospital, hotel, school, shops, Churches and Chapels.

Every mining town had a Miners’ Institute, funded by the miners themselves, which played a very important role in the town’s cultural,  social and educational activities by providing a snooker hall, library, theatre and in some cases a cinema and bar where people could enjoy a drink and a good chat with their friends. Unfortunately they have now fallen into disuse and in many cases demolished to make way for other developments, but happily Oakdale’s Institute, after being closed in 1987, was dismantled in 1989 and rebuilt at the Museum of Welsh Life at St. Fagans where various activities are once more taking place, enabling Oakdale Silver band to perform there every Xmas.
